Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage our feelings, thoughts, and the things in between. Sometimes, self-regulation can be a way of dealing with traumatic events that have happened to us, it allows the body to process and protect us from the stress brought by a terrifying ordeal.
In this episode of Bouncing Back: The Personal Resilience Science Insights Podcast, host Tia Harmer is joined by Cara Dinley. Cara is a movement & body voice specialist, graduating from the University of Melbourne with First Class Honors in a Masters of Directing for Performance. Cara earned her certification in Havening Techniques® from the Psychosensory Academy, UK. For the last twenty years Cara has been using mindbody modalities to help clients, one-on-one and in groups, to develop the relationship between their bodies and minds.
The conversation is started by Cara’s journey to freedom from a series of traumatic injuries that happened to her. Then, she will share her insight on her daily self-regulation practice through Havening Technique and how this helps her to build her resilience.

Self-compassion is a moment where we recognize our suffering, whilst still managing to give ourselves the kindness and positivity that will help us to relieve our suffering. Although self-compassion looks like a simple action, in fact, most of us would likely face challenges while practicing self-compassion.
In this episode of Bouncing Back: The Personal Resilience Science Insights Podcast, host Tia Harmer is joined by Steven Hickman, the Executive Director of the non-profit Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. He is a Certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher and trainer, and a Clinical Psychologist by training. Steven and his colleague, Michelle Becker, co-developed the Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher Training program (both in-person and live online versions) and have directly participated in the training of over 1000 MSC teachers around the world. He has had the privilege of teaching the MSC program many times around the globe and is also a Certified teacher and trainer of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).
The conversation is started by getting to know Steven through his favorite historical fiction book. Then we will go to the meat of the discussion on how he practices self-compassion day-to-day. He also shares how he combined the three components of self-compassion (mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness) when reacting to one particular problem.
